What is Nephrostomy?
A nephrostomy creates a temporary drainage pathway directly from the kidney to the outside of the body, used to relieve a urinary blockage when the normal drainage route through the ureter and bladder is obstructed. Using imaging guidance, a thin tube is inserted through the skin directly into the kidney, allowing urine to drain into an external collection bag while the underlying blockage, such as a kidney stone or tumour, is addressed or resolved. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, and is generally used as a temporary measure to protect kidney function while a more permanent solution is planned.
