Apicoectomy

A minor surgical procedure that removes infected tissue at the tip of a tooth root when a root canal alone isn't enough.

What is Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy removes infected tissue at the very tip of a tooth's root, along with a small portion of the root itself, when infection persists despite a previous root canal treatment. Your dentist or endodontist makes a small incision in the gum near the affected tooth to access the root tip directly, removes the infected tissue, and seals the end of the root to prevent further infection. This allows the tooth to be saved even when a standard root canal retreatment isn't sufficient. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and typically takes thirty minutes to an hour.

Why is this procedure performed?

  • Persistent infection at a tooth's root tip following root canal treatment
  • Pain or swelling near a previously root-canaled tooth
  • Infection that has not resolved with root canal retreatment
  • A desire to save a tooth rather than proceed with extraction
  • Complex root canal anatomy that a standard retreatment cannot fully address

How does this procedure help?

An apicoectomy can save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted, resolving persistent infection at the root tip when conventional root canal treatment has not been sufficient. Most patients experience relief from pain and swelling as the area heals. This procedure has a strong success rate for preserving teeth that might otherwise be lost, avoiding the need for extraction and replacement.
