What to Expect During Medical Tourism in India: A Step-by-Step Guide

Deciding to pursue medical treatment abroad is a significant decision, and not knowing what actually happens at each stage is one of the biggest sources of anxiety for first-time patients. Here's a realistic walkthrough of what the process looks like from start to finish, based on how Medicay Global coordinates care for global patients.

Consultation and intake

The process begins with submitting an online consultation request with basic information about the patient and their medical needs. A non-medical consultant then calls to confirm the request and understand your expectations, explaining what happens next. Uploading medical records at this stage is optional but recommended, since it supports a more complete assessment later — and any records shared are handled only through secure, encrypted channels, never by email.

Clinical assessment

Next, a licensed, practicing physician conducts a clinical assessment call — a deeper conversation involving targeted questions and clarifications about your condition. If medical records haven't already been provided, the physician will request them at this stage to complete a proper evaluation.

Treatment plan, quotes, and agreement

Based on the clinical assessment, a treatment plan and cost estimate is prepared and shared. Quotes are explained fully before you're asked to sign anything, and there's no obligation at this stage — reasonable changes can still be accommodated. Once you're satisfied, a formal agreement is shared for transparency, and it's signed through a secure channel. You're under no obligation until that agreement is signed.

Payment and visa processing

An initial payment is collected as outlined in your agreement to begin visa operations, administrative processing, and government charges. Your visa information is collected only through secure channels. In parallel, hospital coordination, transportation, and accommodation reservations begin through trusted Local Operations Partners on the ground in India.

Once your visa is approved, the remaining balance becomes due according to your agreement — this payment is held securely and released to Local Operations Partners only as defined treatment stages are actually reached, rather than paid out in full upfront.

Travel, treatment, and recovery

With hospital admission confirmed and transportation, accommodation, and food arrangements planned around your needs, you travel for treatment. Airport pickup, drop-off, and local transportation between your hospital and accommodation are coordinated by Local Operations Partners, and your booking details are provided to you ahead of time. A trained Personal Medical Representative is assigned to you throughout — acting as an extension of your interests and remaining available to you during treatment.

After treatment, a recovery plan is shared with you, final medical records are handed over through secure channels, and your case is formally closed once everything is complete.

Frequently asked questions

What's the very first step in the medical tourism process?

It starts with submitting an online consultation request with basic patient information. A consultant then calls to confirm your request and explain the next steps, before a clinical assessment call is scheduled with a physician.

When do I need to travel to India?

Travel happens after your treatment agreement is signed, initial payment is made, your medical visa is approved, and hospital admission and logistics are confirmed — not before your case has been fully assessed and planned.

Am I supported once I'm actually in India for treatment?

Yes. A Personal Medical Representative is assigned to you throughout your stay, and airport transfers, local transportation, and accommodation are coordinated by Local Operations Partners on the ground.
