What is Kyphoplasty?
Kyphoplasty treats a compression fracture of the spine, most commonly caused by osteoporosis, by stabilizing the fractured vertebra and helping restore some of its original height. Through a small incision, your surgeon inserts a thin tube into the fractured vertebra and carefully inflates a small balloon to create space and lift the collapsed bone back toward its normal shape. This space is then filled with a specialized bone cement that hardens quickly, stabilizing the vertebra. The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia and typically takes less than an hour per fractured vertebra treated.
