Rotator Cuff Reconstruction
A procedure that repairs torn shoulder tendons to restore strength and pain-free movement.
What is Rotator Cuff Reconstruction?
The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize your shoulder and allow you to lift and rotate your arm. When one or more of these tendons tears, from injury or gradual wear, it can cause pain and weakness. Rotator cuff reconstruction reattaches the torn tendon to the bone, most often using small anchors, allowing it to heal back into place. This is typically performed arthroscopically, through small incisions using a camera and specialized instruments, though larger or more complex tears may require an open surgical approach. The procedure is performed under general or regional anaesthesia.
Why is this procedure performed?
- Shoulder pain that worsens with overhead movement or lifting
- Weakness in the shoulder affecting daily tasks
- A rotator cuff tear confirmed by imaging
- Shoulder pain that disrupts sleep, particularly when lying on the affected side
- Symptoms that have not improved with physiotherapy or injections
How does this procedure help?
Repairing a torn rotator cuff relieves pain and restores strength and function to the shoulder, allowing you to return to daily activities and, in many cases, sports or physical work. Recovery involves an initial period of protecting the repair, typically in a sling, followed by a structured physiotherapy programme to gradually rebuild strength and range of motion. Most patients see significant improvement within three to six months, with continued gains for up to a year.
