Meatotomy
A minor procedure that widens the urinary opening when it has become too narrow.
What is Meatotomy?
A meatotomy widens the urethral meatus, the opening at the tip of the penis through which urine passes, when it has become narrowed, a condition called meatal stenosis. This narrowing can develop following circumcision, infection, or irritation, and can cause a deflected or difficult urine stream. Your surgeon makes a small, precise incision to widen the opening, typically performed under local anaesthesia as a quick, minor procedure taking just a few minutes.
Why is this procedure performed?
- A narrowed urinary opening causing a deflected or forceful, thin urine stream
- Difficulty aiming during urination
- Discomfort or spraying during urination linked to meatal narrowing
- Meatal stenosis confirmed on examination
- Symptoms affecting comfort or daily function
How does this procedure help?
A meatotomy quickly and effectively resolves the narrowed urinary opening, typically restoring a normal, controlled urine stream almost immediately. This is a minor, well-tolerated procedure with a very quick recovery. Most patients notice immediate improvement in urinary flow and comfort following the procedure.
